2018 MID-YEAR BOOK FREAKOUT TAG

I’ve been all over the place since the last week of June because of Anime Expo 2018 planning. Being a seiyuu otaku is a stressful thing. Don’t be like me… or go for it, you do you. XD It’s fun. But it’s taking so much of my energy. And being someone with anxiety, it’s not the best thing ever. Especially if your workplace is like literal hell.

But I am not here to whine. I’m here to celebrate six months of reading. 70 books. An embarrassing number of them are manga and audio books. And there’s no sign of slowing down. (Well, I kind of did right now but we still have many more months to go.) Here is my last year’s post – 2017 Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag.

I’m currently participating in the 6th round of Tome Topple. I have two books on hand, The Burning World by Isaac Marion on audio and Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff as a physical copy. I’ve been reading on my ereader so much these past months that it felt so strange reading from an actual book. XD Then when AX comes around (IN TWO DAYS!), I’ll be adding an ebook read to this mix.

Now let’s get on to the tag!

1. Best Book You’ve Read Yet in 2018
Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant. It’s the pseudonym of Seanan McGuire. I prefer the works she writes under this name, Parasitology and Feedback being the other ones. This book is about killer mermaids and the expedition sent out to find and study them.

2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2018
Cress by Marissa Meyer. And I think that’s my favorite out of The Lunar Chronicles series.

3. New Release You Haven’t Read Yet But Want To
Last year, I answered Our Dark Duet by Victoria Schwab. I still haven’t read it. Oops. This year, it’s Iron Gold by Pierce Brown. But it looks like it’s going to be my Tome Topple ebook pick for this round. I’m not much into new releases unless it’s from an author that I follow.

4. Most Anticipated Release for the Second Half of the Year
I answered a Marie Lu book last year and I can say the same this year. But with the news of Vengeful by VE Schwab finally being released… I’ll be preordering right after I finish this post!

5. Biggest Disappointment
The two books I read from the Starcrossed series by Leisa RayvenBad Romeo and Broken Juliet. I had such high hopes for these books but goodness me, I’ve never read more annoying characters in my reading life. Now, I’m not even sure if I’ll be reading the 3rd one.

6. Biggest Surprise
NEW ADULT LITERATURE. There was a time when I wouldn’t touch that with a 20-foot pole. But I’ve seen the light and now I can’t get enough. My Kobo is filled with juicy steamy NA books and I’m open to reading just NA romance for a whole month. I’m still very new to the genre but I’ve read so many good ones.

7. Favorite New Author
Hmm, I think Sierra Simone. Hahahaha, I don’t do favorites a lot but I really like her brand of NA. Yes, it’s trashy but it’s written (and researched) well. I can mention Marissa Meyer too but I think that lies a lot on the audio book narrator for The Lunar ChroniclesRebecca Soler.

8. Newest Fictional Crush
Pike Lawson from Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas. This book is everything! XD

9. Newest Favorite Character
Iko from The Lunar Chronicles. Again, thanks in part to the narrator of the audio books. She is such a fun character and the perfect best friend to Cinder.

10. Book That Made You Cry
Again, I am made of stone and rarely cry when reading books. But there’s always one or two that gets me. This year, it’s Orange: Future by Ichigo Takano. I am #TeamSuwa for life!

11. Book That Made You Happy
Gakuen Babysitters by Hari Tokeino always brings a smile on my face whether it be the manga source material or the anime adaptation.

12. Favorite Book to Film Adaptation
Hands down, Haikyuu by Haruichi Furudate. I’m currently doing a catch up on the manga and I’ve watched the whole entire anime series upwards of 50 times, no joke. I became a merch monster because of this franchise and there’s no sign of it ever stopping!

13. Favorite Post You’ve Done This Year
I admit, I haven’t been posting a lot this year. Or at least, lately. I still like my wrap-up videos; mainly because of the research that goes behind it. I haven’t been listing much either. It’s because I’ve been into anime so much lately that reading did take a slight back seat. I’ve been reading but I haven’t been talking about it much.

14. Most Beautiful Book You’ve Bought This Year
I haven’t been buying that many books which is very good. (However, that money is now going to anime merch, lol.) I guess out of the ones that I have purchased… Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore. I actually had two copies, one signed and the other was not. I unhauled the unsigned one. 🙂

15. What Books Do You Need to Read by the End of the Year?
Too many. If I were to treat it as a TBR:

  • Iron Gold by Pierce Brown
  • The rest of Haikyuu
  • Balance by Lucia Franco

There you have it. How is your reading year going so far? 🙂 I’m going back to Anime Expo planning now.

PS: I pre-ordered Vengeful!
