This week, we are talking about Bromances.
I have two lists for you today. The boring book list – I say “boring” because it’s going to be the same as everyone else’s – and my anime list. I am truly more excited for the anime list. I’ve been watching a lot of sports anime and it’s a black hole of bromances, straight up yaoi, and fan fiction fodder for years to come.
I won’t dwell much on the book list but do hear me out:
GRAYSON PIERCE & MONK KOKKALIS, Sigma Force series by James Rollins.
Let’s start with the lesser known one. Their friendship is so great. They’ve been through hell together and lived their lives side by side. They’ve protected each other and have feared to lose one another multiple times. Theirs is one of the strongest relationships in these books.
KELL & RHY, Shades of Magic trilogy by VE Schwab.
They’re adoptive brothers and they quite literally share a lifeline. I feel like this is kind of cheating a bit but this is the best bromantic relationship in this trilogy without crossing the actual m/m romance line. I love how much they care about each other and the guilt they both feel because of how they affect the other’s life.
LEGOLAS & GIMLI, The Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien.
Legolas spent the rest of his Middle-Earth life and beyond with his friend Gimli, a dwarf. They blurred racial lines and forged a lifetime of loyalty and friendship. I mean, I love Aragorn but to be truly honest, he was a 3rd wheel in this friendship. 😉
DARROW & SEVRO, Red Rising trilogy by Pierce Brown.
Loyalty plays a huge part in all the bromances I’ve mentioned so far. This one is no different. These two are foils of each other. They’re opposites but somehow, they found a friend and ally in each other. Sevro continued when Darrow couldn’t and kept the band together. Darrow never lost hope in Sevro. I just love them!
CASSIAN & AZRIEL, A Court of Mist and Fury and A Court of Wings and Ruin by Sarah J. Maas.
This entry will link my two lists together. Why? Because in my head as I was reading these two books, I dreamcasted Cassian as JJ Leroy and Azriel as Otabek Altin from Yuri!!! On Ice. More on that later but in the books, they’re these seemingly chill dudes – really, dudes. They keep Rhysand in check. But then they go to beast mode. They’re so devoted to protecting their loved ones and the sense of obligation is so strong. They’re the best part of the series.
And now, for the fun list… the Top 5 Anime Bromances!
EVERYONE ON YURI!!! ON ICE.
Everyone. Yuuri/Viktor is pretty much yaoi canon. Yurio/Otabek too. But the fandom pretty much has paired everyone with anyone. Yuuri & Nishigori, Yuuri & Phichit, Viktor & Chris, Leo & Guanghong, Emil & Mickey, Yurio & JJ, Otabek & JJ (see above). I can get lost in the YOI tag at Archive of Our Own and the only het relationship would either be a genderswap/bend or something to do with Sara or Mila or some original character. EVERYONE is cute.
MIKAZUKI AUGUS & ORGA ITSUKA, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans.
Just when I thought that I’ve grown jaded with the many different Gundam reincarnations, this comes along. This series completely destroyed me and effectively has gotten me back to assembling Gunpla. Granted I mainly dabble in Beargguys but I digress. Mika and Orga are closer than friends. They are iron-blooded brothers. Their lives were so tragic but they never stopped believing in their cause and most of all, each other. I think my heart broke for them more than anyone in the franchise… or anyone in anime really. Sorry, Nina. 😉
SAITAMA & GENOS, OnePunch-Man.
It’s more of a sensei-student relationship to Genos and it irritates Saitama but I feel like he genuinely appreciates the company and honestly, the admiration. They look out for each other in this weird and funny kind of way. Genos is Saitama’s biggest fan. Saitama just wants to be a parttime hero.
THE BOYS FROM HAIKYUU!!
There’s a line from Kageyama that goes, “You can’t win alone, that’s just how it is.” And it’s so true in this anime. High school volleyball teams filled with teen angst, testosterone, and dreams… expect a shitton of bromance. My favorite would have to be Tsukki & Yamaguchi. Yamaguchi is pretty much my favorite character overall. They have this cool kid and outcast setup where Tsukki saves Yamaguchi from bullies when they were in 3rd grade and ever since then, they were inseparable. Then you have Oikawa & Iwaizumi. A big burly intense guy being called “Iwa-chan” by an ikemen yet equally intense character. You also have Noya & Tanaka, the two delinquents but on-court MVPs. Then there’s the Karasuno 3rd years: Sawamura, Sugawara, and Azumane. That hug they shared in the end broke me. (I watched all 60 episodes in 5 days.)
THE BOYS FROM FREE!
What’s with sports anime and exclamation points. Notice the three have diminishing number of said punctuation marks. There’s another one call Dive!! and you can probably guess what that is about. Speaking of water, Free! is about swimming. The title stands for both the stroke (freestyle crawl) and hey, these are once again teenage boys with dreams. We have two teams of swimmers and all of them have their own pairings. Haru & Makoto are a married couple. Rin & Sousuke are an angsty boyfriend/girlfriend in a long distance relationship. Rin has Haru on the side but recognizes that Haru’s relationship with Makoto is on a different plane. Rei & Nagisa are just having fun. Ai & Momo are senpai-kouhai in the cutest way.
I would also like to point out that these anime share so many seiyuus among them and that also is a treasure trove of bromances. Yoshimasa Hosoya is in all of these shows and he’s a delight to watch at seiyuu events. I wish he was there for the YOI one… guh, all that Otayuri goodness. I recommend watching these anime and hunting down their seiyuu events to get the whole experience.
Okay, back to the books!
